The gaze survives what was painted over it.

“Online the images already look good. But when I saw it at home, it was great. Martin suggested the right frame for it, and it was exactly right. Not cheap, but it lifts the piece to a whole different level.”
Technique & Materials
Every work in the Modern Madonnas series is a unique original – analog, real, tangible. Nothing is retouched here. Things are layered, torn, applied. Layer by layer, different materials are added, reworked, destroyed and rebuilt, until the surface develops not just depth but its own dynamic.
The result: contemporary collage art with character – alive, authentic, unrepeatable.

Cathrill
This is not a face that asks for attention. It takes it. Black ink tears across the features, toxic green bleeds into the skin, a single stroke splits the image like an old scar — and still the eyes stay clear, hard, awake. Looks like destruction, but it’s release. The image smells of the darkroom and a night that went on too long, of control and loss of control in the same moment. Ink, watercolor, William Turner, overpainted by two hands, made this way once. There is no second one, anywhere. You take it because that gaze keeps looking at you, long after you’ve looked away.
The Creative Process
There is no fixed formula in the Modern Madonnas series. Each work grows from the interplay of material and intuition. The collages are not planned in advance — they develop in the process.
Traces of handwork, small irregularities, deliberate imperfections — the process stays visible here. The works live from the human touch: from visible interventions that show a person, not a machine, was at work. That imperfection is exactly what makes them an authentic example of contemporary collage art.
Every piece is created in close collaboration: the photographic foundation is established by Martin Wieland, while the collage, overpainting and material combinations are developed and executed by his art director Dietmar Halbauer. This creative exchange makes each work a layered, unique original.

The right frame doesn’t just protect your artwork — it amplifies it. With our custom frames, every piece takes on a new presence and becomes a genuine focal point, whether in a living room, office or gallery.
We use exclusively high-quality acrylic glass with 99% UV protection, keeping colors from fading long-term. The glass is anti-reflective, lightweight and shatterproof — the same standard used in leading museums.
