Spray red over gold leaf, coarse enough that you can see each pass. Beneath it a figure crouches, not resisting the material but disappearing into it. The shoulder, the lowered head, the hair falling forward — that was the photograph. Then came the cardboard, the spray paint, the acrylic, the white lines going across. Technology & materials

Each work in the Modern Madonnas series is a unique original – analog, genuine, tangible. There is no retouching here, it is layered, torn, applied. Layer by layer, different materials are applied, reworked, destroyed and rebuilt until the surface not only develops depth, but also its very own dynamic.

The result: contemporary collage art with character – lively, authentic, inimitable.

Silent Strip

The skyline is now just a memory of a city, washed away in blue, out of focus. The figure in front of it is the opposite: sharp, solid, bare except for gold and netting. The white paint cracks across the entire surface, trying to cover it up, but failing—only making it stand out more clearly. A hand on the chain, the gaze cold and direct. Nothing rests here except her. Touch-up pen, white paint, wax crayon on acrylic glass, painted over by two hands, signed by both. A one-of-a-kind piece that remains standing when the rest of the image has long since faded away.

The creative process

There is no fixed scheme in the Modern Madonnas series. Each work is created from the interplay of material and intuition. The collages are not planned in advance – they develop in the process.

Traces of manual work, small irregularities, intentional imperfections – the process remains visible here. The works live from the human touch: from visible interventions that show that it was not a machine that worked here, but a person. It is precisely this imperfection that makes it an authentic example of contemporary collage art.

Each picture is created in close collaboration: the photographic basis is created by Martin Wieland, while the collage, overpainting and material combinations are developed and implemented by his art director Dietmar Halbauer. This creative exchange makes each work a multi-layered, unique original.

Frameous

A Beetle, the driver’s seat, the key in the ignition — a scene that looks like leaving and stands perfectly still. The nude underneath is gray and quiet, the oil pastel on top is anything but. Yellow and pink run across thigh and shoulder, a Polaroid frame sits with pink tape right on her and frames exactly what it claims to cover. That’s the whole joke: hiding and showing in the same move. Original on Hahnemühle Baryta, photo, pastel, tape, there is no second one. You start looking at the frame and can’t get away.
