An analog created original from the Modern Madonnas series. This contemporary collage art on board combines oil pastel, acrylic and printed photography in an unadorned, raw expression. Hand-signed, certified and unique.
Between reality and illusion – contemporary collage art
Modern Madonnas – contemporary collage art that cannot be categorized
The Modern Madonnas series breaks with expectations. There are no smooth, decorative pictures for sterile rooms here. This is contemporary collage art that looks, questions and tears up appearances. Paint, sand, varnish – layer by layer, art is created that remains because it does not adapt.
Every work is different. Sometimes collage, sometimes overpainting, sometimes installation. The techniques change, the approaches remain unpredictable – because art lives when it constantly reinvents itself. It is a creative playing field in which materials and methods are constantly recombined, regardless of rules or expectations.
Technology & materials
Each work in the Modern Madonnas series is a unique original – analog, genuine, tangible. There is no retouching here, it is layered, torn, applied. Layer by layer, different materials are applied, reworked, destroyed and rebuilt until the surface not only develops depth, but also its very own dynamic. The result: contemporary collage art with character – lively, authentic, inimitable.

“The pictures look good online. But when I saw it at home, it was great. Martin suggested the right frame for it and it was just right. It’s not cheap, but it takes the picture to a whole new level.”
A picture like an interjection
A face, half hidden, half there. Lines running through skin and shadows like old scars. The oil pastel scratches not only over paper, but also over something inside you that you would rather not look at.
Two levels collide here: Photography as fact, color as disturbance. A work that doesn’t want to please – but stays with you. Like a sentence you never wanted to hear. And yet you remember it.
Tip for collectors
The Modern Madonnas come from the same source as the Collector’s Edition – only here they have been cut, pasted, painted over and rethought. If that appeals to you, take a look at the original prints. You might want to hang the original picture right next to it – raw and refined, side by side.
Although many of the Modern Madonnas’ works fit easily into the office – and, if you look closely, do nothing other than celebrate and worship femininity – some might take offense. For such cases, there is Split Screen – the same handwriting, only without the nude.
For starters: SIGNED.FRAMED.ICONIC – limited to 199 pieces, framed, signed and only online for four weeks.
Or browse through the photo books – and read the newsletter if you want to know what’s coming before it disappears again.
And if you want to know where the idea of cutting, gluing and rearranging comes from – the Tate Gallery explains it better than I ever could.
The creative process
There is no fixed scheme in the Modern Madonnas series. Each work emerges from the interplay of material and intuition. The collages are not planned in advance – they develop in the process.
Traces of manual work, small irregularities, intentional imperfections – the process remains visible here. The works live from the human touch: from visible interventions that show that it was not a machine but a person who worked on them. It is precisely this imperfection that makes them an authentic example of contemporary collage art.
Each picture is created in close collaboration: the photographic basis is created by Martin Wieland, while the collage, overpainting and material combinations are developed and implemented by art director Dietmar Halbauer.
Framing – protection & effect in perfection
A suitable frame not only protects your artwork, but also enhances its effect. With our custom-made frames, every picture takes on a new presence and becomes a real eye-catcher – whether in the living room, in the office or in a gallery.
We use a special acrylic glass with almost 100% UV protection. It is low-reflection, lightweight and shatterproof – and protects the colors from fading in the long term.
Collector’s value & unique character
The Modern Madonnas series is aimed at art collectors who value authenticity. Each work is a genuine original – created in analog form, hand-signed and only available once. The included certificate of authenticity documents the value.
